What is "Hacking"?

Wait, isn't "hacking" about breaking into computers and doing illegal stuff?

Not at all! The media often portrays "hackers" as criminals, but that's not what we mean by hacking!

Here's what hacking really means to us:

  • Creative problem-solving - Finding clever solutions to challenging problems
  • Building cool things - Creating technology projects from scratch
  • Learning by doing - Diving in, experimenting, and figuring things out
  • Sharing knowledge - Collaborating and teaching others what you know
  • Cultivating curiosity - Asking "How does this work?" and "How can I make it better?"

"Hack" = build something quickly and cleverly

The term "hack" comes from MIT in the 1960s - it was all about playful creativity and technical exploration. Hack Club, and by extension Hack Somerset, continues this tradition of positive, creative, and inclusive hacking.

So when we say "Hack Somerset," we're inviting you to join a community where you can create, learn, and explore technology in a fun and supportive environment!
